I had some leftover artificial flowers from a previous project hanging out in my craft closet. So, I decided to Plaster of Paris them. Plaster of Paris flowers are inexpensive to make and can be incorporated into a variety of projects.

I love how they look on this white washed heart shaped grapevine wreath.

Here’s what you need to create the flowers-
  • Plaster of Paris
  • Fake Flower Heads (Mine are from the dollar store)
  • Tinfoil/Wax Paper (to dry them on)
  • Mixing container/Utensil

Following the instructions on the Plaster of Paris container, mix up a small batch and submerge a flower into the mixture. The mixture dries fast, so work quickly! If you don’t like getting your hands sloppy, I suggest you wear gloves because this is a messy project.

Use a spoon to cover the back side. Shake off excess. Set aside to dry for 30 minutes on tinfoil/waxpaper. Do any petal arranging now before the first coat dries.

This is what the flowers looked like after the first coat of Plaster of Paris. Once the first layer is dried, repeat the first two steps again covering any spots that were missed.

Here is what the flowers looked like after the second coating of Plaster of Paris.

I did three coats of Plaster of Paris on my flowers to make sure they were totally covered. Make sure to let dry in between coats. Once completed and fully dried, you can paint or add a glossy finish them. I like the way they look with just the Plaster of Paris coating. So, I left mine as is.

Thinking of making some Plaster of Paris flowers? I’d love to see them. Email me at slumberingalligator@gmail.com with pictures of your project.
