I was in need of a small rug. So, in true DIY’er fashion, I made one. I love the bold look of it. It’s almost hypnotizing!

You don’t need much to make this rug. Just lots of hot glue, 100 feet of polypropylene rope, a piece of felt (for the underside of the rug), scissors, a marker and spray adhesive.

For the ten thousandth time, please forgive my dirty glue gun! Years of use! To make the rope rug, begin coiling the rope on a flat surface in a tight circle. Working in small sections, apply hot glue in the seams as you wrap. Be careful not to burn yourself! Make sure the rope is pulled taught and there isn’t a gap between the seams.

Continue coiling and glueing until all 100 ft of rope is used. This process is somewhat time consuming and a little tricky, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be done in a flash. Obviously, this is the backside of the rug.

Once my rug was fully coiled and glued, I traced around it onto a piece of felt to create a circular back for the rug.

Using Aleene’s Tacky Spray, I attached the felt piece over the ugly unfinished side of my rug. This step helps hold everything together a little better too.

I just love it!

  1. Love it. what a great idea!!!

  2. I need a rug by my sliding glass door. I think this idea is perfect! And rope comes in so many cool colors now! Thanks for the project idea Mark!

  3. Love this! If you’re a klutzy person like me (literally, I can trip over flat floor and face-plant) maybe a thin yoga mat for the backing would be a good idea?
