Save those Halloween candy wrappers! You’ll need them for this DIY cart. Luckily, I have a friend on the inside who scored me these Tootsie Roll Pop wrappers. This wheeled cart is perfect for Halloween, but with different styling can be used year round. Be sure to scroll to the bottom of this post to see the cart decked out this way.
Ok, friends, I must admit this project is a little more complex and pricier than most of my other creations. All the hardware certainly adds up! However, this project can be customized to fit any budget. A single candy wrapper tray makes a fun serving piece, a unique way to serve Halloween treats or breakfast in bed. If you choose to only use two trays and elevate one above the other, you’ll have a wonderful tiered serving tray that can be placed on a tabletop for parties.
Alright, heres how I made this beast. First, I picked up three unfinished serving trays from a local big box store.
I painted the sides of each tray with FolkArt Matte Acrylic Paint in Pure Black.
Then, I used Matte Mod Podge to adhere my Tootsie Roll Pop wrappers to the inside of each tray. I think a variety of different candy wrappers would be really fun.
Since the bottoms of my trays were very thin, I needed to bulk them up in order to screw into them. I had three pieces of scrap wood cut for me to match the size of my trays at my local hardware store. I painted the sides and bottoms of each one in Pure Black to match the tray coloring.
I attached the wood pieces (painted side down) to the bottom of each tray using E6000 glue.
While I was at the hardware store, I picked up 6 1/2″ x 9″galvanized nipples and 12 1/2″ black flanges.
I assembled my hardware and then began to assemble the cart. I placed a pipe column in the front corners and one in the center back of my bottom tray and screwed them in.
I placed the second tray on top of my columns and traced around the flanges to help indicate where to drill my next holes.
I repeated this process for the next level. Finally, I screwed four wheels into the bottom of the cart.
I love how it all came together. Its a really fun and functional piece.
Mixing up the accessories makes it a statement piece year round.
